Common Misconceptions Clients Have About “Doing Therapy Wrong”
Many people hesitate to start therapy, or feel anxious during sessions, because they worry they’re “doing it wrong.” The truth is, there’s no single right way to be a client, and most of these fears are based on misconceptions.
Some clients think they must have the “right” problem or that only severe issues deserve therapy. In reality, therapy can help with anything that feels challenging, confusing, or stressful, and that can be big or small. Others worry they have to talk constantly or provide perfect answers. Silence, pauses, or uncertainty are normal and often part of the process.
Many fear that showing emotion, crying, or expressing anger is inappropriate. In fact, expressing feelings safely in therapy is part of how change happens. Some clients also believe they must immediately “fix themselves” or feel better after every session. Progress in therapy is rarely linear, and slow, steady growth is completely normal.
Finally, clients often worry about judgments, but therapists are trained to provide a non-judgmental, supportive space.
Therapy works best when clients give themselves permission to be themselves, ask questions, and trust the process. There’s no right way to do it, just your way!
